Coogee House 1 Coogee, Sydney

Description

Explore the recent California Bungalow Renovation in Coogee, where M+M Architects undertook significant additions and alterations to enhance the property. The project included adding a first floor, rear ground floor, pool, and garage, accommodating the contrasting desires of the owners: one prioritizing the preservation of the original character, while the other sought a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

The original house facing the street was meticulously preserved, with a focus on reinstating key features such as the porch, bay window, and internal fixtures. This restoration effort aimed to honor the home’s historical integrity while integrating modern conveniences seamlessly.

In contrast, the new additions showcase a contemporary design ethos characterized by raw, industrial elements such as plywood cladding and unpainted steelwork. This choice of materials adds a distinctive, modern flair to the property’s aesthetic while complementing its surroundings.

Internally, we meticulously designed the living spaces to be bright and airy, ensuring a seamless connection to the outdoors. Large windows and doors invite access to the pool, garden, and deck area, equipped with an extendable awning for flexible weather protection and outdoor enjoyment.

We emphasized the transition from the original heavy rendered masonry to lightweight plywood cladding and exposed steel framing through deliberate color schemes, detailing, and fitting selections. The roof plays a pivotal role as a unifying element, shielding the new additions from street view while visually integrating the old and new sections of the house.

Overall, this California Bungalow Renovation in Coogee exemplifies M+M Architects’ commitment to blending heritage preservation with contemporary design innovation. The result is a harmonious blend of old and new, where the California Bungalow’s traditional charm meets modern functionality and style, creating a home that is both timeless and distinctive.
