M+M Architects is proud to present this Neutral Bay Heritage House renovation.
The existing house is a beautiful Federation-style building with a rich history, once used as a boarding house. Over the years, it had seen many small additions and changes, adding to its unique character.
The house is solidly built with cavity brick walls and a tile roof. It retains many charming original features, such as fireplaces, moulded ceilings, solid timber doors, floors, and decorative skirting boards. Preserving these elements was a priority during the renovation.
To accommodate modern living, the 1950s additions at the rear were removed for a more substantial extension. M+M Architects designed a contemporary addition that blends seamlessly with the original structure, providing the needed functionality. The new extension includes a state-of-the-art kitchen, a spacious butler’s pantry, a convenient laundry room, and a cozy sitting area for family relaxation and entertaining.
In addition to the main extension, minor changes were made to the existing stairway and the first floor. These updates included adding a wardrobe and an ensuite bathroom, enhancing the home’s comfort and practicality.
Construction began during the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing its own set of challenges. Material availability was a significant issue due to disrupted global supply chains. Additionally, increased costs had to be carefully managed. Despite these hurdles, the project progressed with meticulous planning and dedication.
The result is a harmonious blend of old and new. The Neutral Bay Heritage house conservation project kept the historical elements of the Federation-style house and beautifully integrate it with modern amenities.
The careful restoration and thoughtful additions have transformed the house into a welcoming and functional home that honors its past while embracing the future.
