Curl Curl House 1

Description

Discover Northern Beach’s Curl Curl with M+M Architects.

This project Northern Beach’s Curl Curl focused on transforming an old cottage situated on a lot where a large, sprawling house once stood. The house, positioned at the back of the property, extended onto a broad public walkway. Over the years, the original structure had seen numerous haphazard additions and alterations, resulting in a cluttered look with an array of timber components, decks, and covered pergolas that almost completely covered the block.

Our design brief aimed to refresh and simplify the landscape surrounding the cottage. We began by removing all asbestos from the property, ensuring a safer and cleaner environment. The goal was to create a more cohesive and visually appealing structure. Key to our design was an elevated living area that featured a North Eastern viewing deck. We also wanted the kitchen to open directly onto this deck, enhancing indoor-outdoor living.

To achieve this, we introduced a new lower floor beneath the kitchen and deck area. This added space now houses a main bedroom, a study, and an ensuite bathroom. We simplified the house’s overall form into two distinct sections, which helped streamline its appearance. The entire structure was reclad to unify all elements, giving the house a more harmonious look.

One major change involved relocating the main entrance. We moved it to the center of the Western wall and added new windows to increase natural light and improve the visual appeal. Internally, we selected a softer color palette for the materials to reflect Curl Curl’s relaxed, beachside atmosphere. This new color scheme creates a serene and inviting environment, enhancing the living experience and aligning with the Northern Beaches lifestyle.
